Name

This national Catholic outreach among inmates and those affected by crime is named after one of the people executed with Jesus on Calvary. In that final hour DISMAS took stock of his life and turned to Jesus for mercy: "Jesus, remember me when you enter your kingdom Luke 23:42." In the way that was typical of his ministry, Jesus turned to him and said:"This day you will be with me in paradise Luke 23:43."

OUTREACH

DISMAS MINISTRY, in the spirit of Jesus who was both convict and victim, is committed to carrying on this special outreach of hope inaugurated by Jesus, by serving those convicted of crime and advocating for those victimized by crime.

It strives for restorative justice, encouraging the spiritual transformation of inmates in the hope that this will have a positive effect on everyone affected by crime - offenders, and victims as well as the community.

Not everyone in the faith community is able to become directly involved in prison ministry. DISMAS MINISTRY offers a way to reach the imprisoned by supplying those who visit prisons with much needed free bibles, bible and faith study materials, and Catholic prayer books.

FOCUS

DISMAS MINISTRY focuses primarily on a spiritual approach with inmates who want to understand and strengthen their relationship with God. As one of them wrote, "Prisoners need God and the love of Jesus and Mary as much or even more than the population as a whole."

Inmates who deepen their faith and grow in understanding of scripture will become less likely to offend others when they are released. For this reason, DISMAS provides bible and faith study materials, a prayer book for inmates, and free Catholic bibles. As Jesus taught us: "What you have received freely, give freely" Matthew 10:8.

DISMAS MINISTRY also supports victims of crime - the walking wounded - by creating an awareness of their needs in the community. It does this in various ways: by providing literature about victims' needs and resources for their care, special prayer services for victims in which they can find support from the faith community and mutual encouragement from their fellow victims. Victims lead the way in showing us how to be there for them.

GOAL

The ultimate goal of DISMAS MINISTRY is to re-establish and strengthen the relationship of the Body of Christ with victims and those in prison. Despite where they are, inmates are still members of Christ's Body and should not be dismissed as worthless. As one inmate said, "We are not animals." Many will use their time behind bars to reassess their lives, and with God's help, make amends for the way that they have victimized others. As fellow Catholics, we can walk with them on the way to encountering God in his Word, doing whatever we can to support this spiritual transformation.

When a crime is committed, it offends not only the immediate victim, but the rest of society as well. Supporting the work of faith-based rehabilitation provides those who feel powerless against crime with a practical way to do something about it. Such an approach goes to the very heart of the problem - the need for God in the lives of all who have been affected by crime. Many inmates have been abused when they were children. In turn, their victims have suffered abuse from them. In the end, the only true healing is spiritual. Only God can transform suffering into victory as He did for Jesus.

ANNOUNCING “LA FE CATOLICA”

A NEW SPANISH-LANGUAGE STUDY

OF THE CATHOLIC FAITH

Dismas Ministry is pleased to announce the publication of its study of the Catholic faith for Spanish-speaking Catholics called: “LA FE CATOLICA–La Enseñanza de los Apóstoles” (The Catholic Faith–The Teaching of the Apostles).

This unique Spanish-language resource has been designed for use by individuals at home or by small faith groups. It provides a thorough understanding of the Catholic tradition for the average person who does not have a background in theology or scripture, but would like to brush up on their Catholic faith, clear up their own misconceptions and be able to defend their faith when challenged by fundamentalists. It is written in easy to understand format and includes abundant references to the Bible. All three parts of the book have been published with ecclesiastical permission. The entire publication is dedicated to Our Lady of Good Help.

The study covers the essentials of the Catholic faith in three parts: Part 1-The Creed, Part 2-the Sacraments and Part 3-Christian Morality. Each section ends with a review that provides questions in a self-testing format. Separate answer sheets are provided for self-correction. The 3-part book is available for a suggested donation of $14.95 plus $3 for shipping. The donation supports Dismas Ministry’s outreach by providing Spanish Bibles for Catholics in prison.

To request a copy of LA FE CATOLICA simply send a check for $17.95 ($14.95 plus $3 for shipping) to: Dismas Ministry, PO Box 070363, Milwaukee, WI 53207.

I Am Beautiful A Project for Women Survivors of Abuse - After more than a year of gathering the precious contributions of art and writings from women in the 71 women’s prisons across the U.S, the "I Am Beautiful" project completed a book by the same name, to benefit women in prison who have experienced abuse at some point in their lives. This special resource gives survivors the opportunity to support other women in prison who have experienced abuse. Free copies were distributed to the chaplains of all 71 women’s prisons in December of 2010. Copies are available to the public for a suggested donation of $12. Click here for more information.
